At least thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
