Drone Attack on United Nations Facility in War-Torn Sudan Leaves 6 UN Personnel

A drone strike targeted a United Nations facility in war-torn Sudan on Saturday, causing the loss of six UN soldiers, as stated by a statement.

The strike occurred at a UN outpost in the city of Kadugli, situated in the mid-country region of Kordofan.

Eight additional peacekeepers were hurt in the attack. All the victims are from Bangladesh, part of the UN interim security force for Abyei (Unisfa).

“Strikes against UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law,” it was declared, urging the culprits for the “unjustifiable” strike to be brought to justice.

Military Accuses Paramilitary Group

The Sudanese military blamed the incident on the paramilitary RSF group, a prominent armed faction that has been at war with the government troops for control of the country for more than two years.

The attack “demonstrates the destructive approach of the armed faction and those behind it,” the army said in a communication.

Context of the Disputed Region

The oil-rich Abyei is a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan, and the peacekeeping force has been stationed there since 2011, when South Sudan became independent from Sudan.

Demands for an urgent halt to fighting in Sudan were also made to allow “a comprehensive, inclusive and Sudanese-owned dialogue” to resolve the war.

Nation Engulfed in Conflict Since 2023

Sudan was thrown into chaos in April 2023 when a political rivalry between the military and the RSF exploded into direct clashes in the city of Khartoum and elsewhere the country.

  • The war has killed more than 40,000 people, a toll human rights organizations consider a major underestimate.
  • Recent fighting has focused on Kordofan, particularly since paramilitary forces seized El Fasher.
  • The war has devastated towns and has been noted for horrors, including mass rape and ethnic slaughter.
  • These crimes have been labeled crimes against humanity by international bodies.
  • The war has also precipitated the planet's most severe humanitarian crisis and forced parts of the country into famine.
