The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.” As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus. Regarding the Incredible Fan Response Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise. “It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.” In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show. “We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.” “We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in. A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus? Considering the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… with some caveats. “We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.” Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on. “I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.” Alternatively, why mess with the iconic TV endings? “My dream is Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
