UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate church.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The central mechanic involves managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
