Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using such medications must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
