What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
