What's Inside the Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the past of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a discovery that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

Editor's Note: The following details significant events for the concluding episodes.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a child version of Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the act went deeper than a simple act of survival.

Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the truth about the encounter originates in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to give to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is known about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the awakening of his powers—abilities he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the ultimate battle that awaits.
